Juvenile inmates at Ghana's SCC achieve 100% BECE pass rate

All 11 juvenile inmates at the Senior Correctional Centre (SCC) in Accra, Ghana, passed the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). The candidates, who sat for the exams through the Ghana Education Service’s prison education programme, qualified for Senior High School (SHS). Some students achieved high marks, including passing all nine subjects and securing impressive aggregates.

Deputy Director of Prisons and SCC Officer-in-Charge, Yayra Ashong-Mettle, stated that the achievement reflects the Ghana Prisons Service's mandate of reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration. She noted that the students studied at Reformers Junior High School within the facility, overcoming challenges such as limited resources and the emotional burdens of incarceration. The success was attributed to the dedication of the inmates, the efforts of prison officers acting as teachers, and support from volunteers and non-governmental organisations.

Sena Okity-Duah, Coordinator of the Free SHS Secretariat, also recognized the academic development of the inmates, highlighting the role of the government's Free Senior High School policy in removing financial barriers to secondary education.
