Juvenile pilot whale found dead on Essex beach

A juvenile pilot whale was found dead on a beach on Canvey Island, Essex, on the morning of September 20. The animal was part of a large pod that recently entered the Thames Estuary, an area outside its typical habitat.

The presence of the pod prompted a significant rescue operation involving HM Coastguard, the Port of London Authority, and British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR). While the juvenile whale was found deceased, rescue teams successfully guided the remaining members of the pod into deeper waters off the Kent coast.
