Juventus seeks to offload Loïs Openda on loan to Lens, will subsidize wages

Loïs Openda’s spell at Juventus has been a costly disappointment. After scoring only two goals in 34 Serie A appearances, the Belgian forward, bought for a €42.5‑€42.75 million fee, is surplus to requirements.

RC Lens, the French club where Openda netted 21 league goals in the 2022‑23 season, is negotiating a loan return. The proposed deal hinges on Juventus covering a substantial portion of his salary – reports say Openda would agree to a 40 % wage cut, with the remaining wages split between Juventus and Lens. Such financial assistance is needed because Lens cannot afford his full contract.

Lens have qualified for the Champions League, adding sporting appeal for Openda. Coventry City in England has also expressed interest, but the primary obstacle remains the salary contribution. Juventus hopes the loan will alleviate the financial burden of what has become one of its biggest recent transfer missteps.
