Tulum airport faces declining connectivity as Aeroméxico and Volaris suspend flights

The Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum is experiencing a significant decline in passenger traffic and airline connectivity. Data from the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) shows a 33.6% reduction in passenger movement between January and August 2026 compared to the previous year.

In response to low demand and profitability concerns, Aeroméxico suspended its operations to Tulum on September 30, 2026. Volaris has also announced it will temporarily cease operations at the terminal starting January 7, 2027. These adjustments follow a period of low hotel occupancy in the region, which dropped to 63.7% between January and July.

Industry experts suggest that while travelers are still active, they are shifting their spending to other Caribbean destinations, such as Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, which has seen significant growth in direct connections from Mexico. President Claudia Sheinbaum has deferred detailed comments on the airline cancellations until representatives from the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), which manages the airport, provide an official report.
