JW Pharmaceutical announces Empagard Phase 3 trial results
JW Pharmaceutical announced the results of its Phase 3 clinical trial for Empagard, a combination therapy of anagliptin and empagliflozin, at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD 2026) conference. The study focused on type 2 diabetes patients who had insufficient blood sugar control using a combination of metformin and empagliflozin.
The 24-week trial, conducted across 26 hospitals in South Korea, demonstrated that the Empagard group achieved a significantly higher reduction in HbA1c levels (0.81%) compared to the control group (0.24%). Additionally, the rate of patients reaching the target HbA1c level of 7.0% or lower was 55.7% in the Empagard group, more than double the 25.5% observed in the control group.
Beyond glucose reduction, the trial indicated improvements in pancreatic beta-cell function and reduced fasting blood glucose. Regarding safety, the Empagard group showed side effect rates similar to the control group, with no reported cases of severe hypoglycemia. Professor Kim Sang-yong of Chosun University Hospital presented the findings, highlighting Empagard as a safe and effective option for patients with limited treatment choices.
