Jyväskylä Pride focuses on inclusion in physical activities

Jyväskylä Pride is set to take place from September 7 to September 13, 2026, organized by Jyväskylän SETA ry. This year’s theme, ‘Physical Activity Peace for All,’ focuses on the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals to participate in sports and physical activities without fear of judgment regarding their appearance, body, or identity.

Petri Janhunen, chairman of Jyväskylän SETA, noted that many individuals feel forced to hide their identities in locker rooms or avoid hobbies altogether due to fear of harassment. He emphasized that this is a public health concern, as the lack of safe spaces prevents people from engaging in physical activity.

The week features approximately 70 events, including a Pride Hike, rugby trials, dance sessions, and queer folk music jams. The University of Jyväskylä and its student union are also participating, hosting activities such as ‘Queer Speed Friending’ and a panel discussion regarding the presence of rainbow communities in the sports sector. The week will culminate in the Jyväskylä Pride parade on Saturday, September 12.
