Józef Czapski honored through exhibitions and festivals in Poland

Multiple cultural events are honoring the multifaceted legacy of Józef Czapski, a renowned Polish painter, writer, and wartime witness.

In Krakow, the National Museum is hosting the exhibition ‘Oblicza Czapskiego’ (Faces of Czapski), which features over fifty works, primarily from private collections. The exhibition highlights his diverse artistic style, ranging from analytical to intuitive, and explores his ability to capture fleeting moments through sketches and paintings. It also touches upon his literary contributions and his experiences as a Polish officer during the war, including his time in Soviet camps and his documentation of the Katyn massacre.

In Warsaw, the 10th Political Theology Festival, titled ‘Józef Czapski. Painter, Writer, Witness’, will take place from October 13 to 21. This interdisciplinary event includes discussions, film screenings, and illustration workshops. The festival coincides with the year designated by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland as the Year of Józef Czapski. Programming will cover his involvement with the Kapists group, his life in emigration, and his reflections on the social responsibility of art and culture.
