Józef Michałek named Carpathian Personality 2026
Józef Michałek from Istebna has been awarded the title ‘Carpathian Personality 2026’ for his long-term dedication to preserving and developing pastoral traditions. The honor was presented on October 24 during a ceremony in Ludźmierz as part of the 2nd Carpathian Festival.
Michałek was recognized for his efforts to protect pastoral heritage, support shepherds and mountain assistants, and foster cooperation between mountain communities. The award includes the ‘Carpathian Vlach’ statuette, which references the historical influence of Vlach pastoral migrations on the culture and economy of Central and Eastern European mountain regions.
The award was presented by Monika Gubała, Director of the Department of Culture and National Heritage of the Małopolska Voivodeship, and Andrzej Zarych, Director of the Małopolska Cultural Center SOKÓŁ. This year's festival aligns with the United Nations' declaration of 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists.
