Józefa Marciniak, 104‑year‑old Warsaw Uprising veteran, dies

Józefa Marciniak (codenamed “Kropka”), born on 21 October 1921 in Adamówka, Volhynia, died at the age of 104. She served as a medic and liaison for the Kiliński Battalion during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, operating mainly in the northern city centre. After Warsaw’s capitulation she continued underground work in Kraków, joining the Home Army’s foreign communications unit under the codename “Zagroda”. In the post‑war years she documented wartime experiences, publishing books such as *Wołyńska ziemio moja* and *W służbie Ojczyzny z kpt. Marcysią w Zagrodzie*. Her death was reported by the “Nie zapomnij o nas” foundation, which remembered her words: “Before the war youth was raised in great patriotic religious spirit and service to Poland was an obligation until death.” Marciniak spent her final years in the Formazinic Sisters’ home in Zalesiu Górny, near Warsaw.
