József Mónus sets new long-distance archery world record

Hungarian archer József Mónus has set a new world record in long-distance archery with a shot measuring 1,063.59 meters. The achievement took place in the dried lakebed of Smith Creek, Nevada, during a competition sanctioned by World Archery and USA Archery.

Mónus surpassed the previous record of 1,062.79 meters, which had stood for 29 years, by 80 centimeters. During the attempt, he shot six arrows; four were located at approximately 800 meters, and a fifth landed at 1,059 meters. The record-breaking sixth arrow required an extensive search by officials before its exact distance was confirmed.

The feat follows a year of intensive preparation. Mónus, who also researches historical archery and crafts his own bows and arrows, noted that the achievement represents “a lifetime of work.” He shoots approximately 250,000 arrows annually during training and competitions.
