K-beauty innovation shifts global makeup and skincare trends
Korean beauty, or K-beauty, has evolved from a niche interest into a global influence characterized by innovation and a skin-first philosophy. Unlike traditional Western makeup approaches that often focus on heavy, matte coverage and contouring, K-beauty emphasizes enhancing natural features to achieve a healthy, youthful, and glowing appearance.
A central pillar of this movement is the ‘glass skin’ trend, which aims for a complexion that is intensely hydrated, smooth, and luminous. This look is achieved through meticulous skincare preparation—such as layering hydrating toners, essences, and serums—and the use of lightweight products like BB creams or cushion foundations rather than full-coverage matte foundations.
Beyond specific aesthetics, the K-beauty industry is noted for rethinking product categories, such as integrating skincare benefits into foundations and moisturizers designed for barrier support. This focus on texture, hydration, and ingredient-driven results has prompted Western beauty brands to shift their own strategies toward similar skin-centric approaches.
