K-beauty trends drive global skincare interest and skinimalism

The global popularity of K-beauty has expanded significantly, driven by social media platforms like TikTok and the influence of high-profile celebrities such as Hailey Bieber and Bruna Marquezine. This movement has introduced various trends, including the pursuit of ‘glass skin’ through multi-step routines.

However, dermatologists have raised concerns regarding the intensive 10-step skincare routines popularized by Korean cosmetics. Specialist Natasha Castillo notes that the skin has a limited absorption capacity, and applying excessive layers can lead to irritation, sensitivity, redness, or breakouts by disrupting the skin barrier.

As a response to these concerns, a new trend known as ‘skinimalism’ is emerging. This philosophy advocates for simpler, more effective routines tailored to the actual needs of the skin rather than following exhaustive multi-step processes.
