K2 porter death captured in new documentary footage

Newly released footage from the documentary “Savage Mountain” provides details regarding the death of mountain guide Muhammad Hassan on K2 in July 2023. The video shows Norwegian mountaineer Kristin Harila and her team encountering the 27-year-old porter hanging upside down by a rope approximately 2,000 feet from the summit.

According to the film, Hassan was in critical condition, suffering from extreme cold and lacking essential gear such as oxygen, gloves, and a down suit. Documentary cameraman Gabriel Tarso reported attempting to provide warmth and hot water to the climber. The team faced extreme difficulties, including an avalanche that struck the area during the night.

Harila and her guide, Tenjen “Lama” Sherpa, eventually continued their ascent after attempting to secure Hassan with a new rope. Tarso remained with Hassan until instructed by another team member to leave him behind due to his deteriorating condition. Harila has previously faced death threats following footage showing the team passing the porter's body.
