Kabiru Mijinyawa leads mass defection from APC to APM in Adamawa

Alhaji Kabiru Mijinyawa, the former Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly and current representative for Yola South, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Action Peoples Movement (APM). Mijinyawa led thousands of supporters in the move, citing a lack of transparency, rule of law, and internal democracy within the APC.

Mijinyawa specifically criticized the conduct of recent APC primary elections, stating that candidates were “picked... without due process.” This mass exit follows a similar wave of defections involving hundreds of APC chieftains led by former PDP chairman Alhaji Tahir Shehu, who also joined the APM.

The political realignment in Adamawa State is reportedly driven by disputes over substituted candidacies. Allegations include the replacement of original primary winners in the governorship race, the Adamawa Central Senatorial District, and Adamawa South. These shifts come ahead of the 2027 general elections.
