Kaduna cattle breeders report 200,000 livestock lost and 50 deaths

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has reported significant losses in Kaduna State due to insecurity. Between January and September 2026, the association claims over 200,000 cattle were lost to cattle rustling, banditry, and communal clashes.

In addition to the livestock losses, MACBAN stated that at least 50 of its members were killed during this period. The deaths were attributed to various factors, including communal conflicts, attacks by farmers, and killings by bandits during rustling operations.

State Chairman Alhaji Abdulhamid Musa noted that the loss of these herds poses a severe threat to the livelihoods of pastoralist communities, as cattle represent a means of survival passed down through generations. The association identified several affected areas, including Kachia, Chikun, Kagarko, Giwa, Igabi, Jama’a, Kaura, Sanga, Jaba, Kudan, Makarfi, Lere, Zangon-Kataf, and Kauru.
