Kaduna emergency agencies launch rescue operations after flash floods

Emergency response agencies have launched search, rescue, and evacuation operations in Kaduna following a flash flood that struck parts of the Kaduna metropolis on Sunday evening. The flooding impacted areas including Asikolaye and the Federal Polytechnic, Tudun Wada, within the Kaduna North Local Government Area.

Multiple organizations are participating in the response, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency, the Red Cross Society, and both Federal and State Fire Services. While floodwaters have begun to recede in some locations, residual water remains in certain areas. Officials are currently verifying casualty reports, though one boy has reportedly drowned during the incident.

Authorities have attributed the severity of the flooding to the indiscriminate disposal of non-biodegradable waste, which has clogged drainage channels and restricted stormwater flow. Officials are calling for improved public awareness regarding waste collection, regular desilting of drains, and stricter enforcement against dumping refuse in waterways.
