Kaduna High Court sentences woman to five years for ammunition possession
The High Court of Justice in Kaduna has sentenced Aisha Abubakar to five years of imprisonment for the unlawful possession of weapons. Abubakar was arrested with 500 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition, which authorities stated were intended for bandits in Katsina State.
In his judgment delivered on October 15, 2026, Justice John Ambi ruled that the defendant violated Section 393 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017. The judge noted that despite Abubakar’s pleas for mercy, the court must consider the devastating impact of national insecurity and the potential havoc the ammunition could have caused if not intercepted.
The prosecution, led by Emmanuel Ekpenyong of Fred-Young & Evans LP acting on behalf of the Attorney-General of Kaduna State, argued the case based on evidence including an extra-judicial statement. Defense counsel Victor Fredrick challenged whether the prosecution had proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
