Kaduna State University faces strike threat as 200 academics depart

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter at Kaduna State University (KASU) has issued a two-week ultimatum to university authorities and the Kaduna State Government. The union is demanding the full implementation and domestication of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement, which provides improved conditions of service for academic staff. ASUU leadership warns that failure to comply could lead to a total and indefinite strike.

According to ASUU Chairman Abubakar Abdullahi, the university has seen an exodus of over 200 academic staff, including professors, due to poor remuneration and declining welfare. He noted that while many federal and state institutions have implemented the agreement, KASU has yet to act despite the pact taking effect in January 2026.

In response, KASU Vice Chancellor Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa has refuted these claims, describing the reported number of resignations as manufactured and misleading. The Vice Chancellor stated that staff movements such as retirements and transfers are normal within the university system and challenged the union to provide verifiable evidence. He further noted that the state government has released significant funds, including over ₦800 million, to support staff welfare and clear salary arrears.
