Kaf al-Ghar Cave identified as significant geological and archaeological site in Morocco
The Kaf al-Ghar Cave, located in the Taza region of northeastern Morocco, has been identified as a significant karstic site of scientific, geological, and archaeological importance. Research conducted by Saida Bouazza and colleagues from Mohammed V University, published in Acta Carsologica, highlights the cave's geodiversity and its value as a geosite.
Field investigations have revealed well-developed karst morphologies, active hydrological systems, and various mineral formations, including calcitic speleothems. These features provide critical data for studying the geological evolution of the Taza province and the local karst landscape. The cave's stratigraphic exposures also offer opportunities to examine regional geological successions.
Beyond its natural characteristics, the site contains evidence of historical human settlement and archaeological artifacts. This suggests a long-standing relationship between local communities and the subterranean environment, adding cultural and tourism value to the site. Experts emphasize the need for both the protection of this sensitive location and the facilitation of specialized scientific research.
