Kafountine fishing pier generates 20 billion CFA francs annually

The Kafountine fishing pier in southern Senegal generates an estimated annual turnover of nearly 20 billion CFA francs, according to Mayor David Diatta. Despite this significant economic activity, the municipality receives less than 10 million CFA francs in annual fees.

During the launch of a modern smoking center and a control post, Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy Amy Mara Dièye highlighted the site's importance. In 2025, over 43,986 tonnes of products were landed, supporting more than 6,118 fishermen and 865 active pirogues.

Mayor Diatta warned that the site is an “economic giant with feet of clay,” noting that coastal erosion poses a severe threat. He cautioned that without intervention, the pier could disappear within 20 years.
