Kahramanmaraş health initiatives focus on elderly wellness

In observance of International Day of Older Persons on October 1, Kahramanmaraş Metropolitan Municipality and Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University (KSÜ) conducted comprehensive health screenings for citizens aged 65 and older. Held at the Active Living Center within the Faculty of Medicine, the program provided geriatric evaluations, including assessments of memory, emotional state, nutrition, muscle mass, sleep patterns, and daily living activities.

Medical experts provided guidance on disease prevention, nutrition, and exercise programs to mitigate mobility loss and fall risks. Nutritionists also performed body composition analyses, focusing on fat and muscle mass to inform individual follow-up care.

Complementing these clinical efforts, medical research highlights that even a single weekly session of resistance training can significantly combat sarcopenia—the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength. Experts note that for individuals over 70, or those with chronic conditions, resistance exercises using light dumbbells, bands, or body weight can improve balance and mobility. Studies indicate that muscle tissue can be built even in individuals in their 80s and 90s, provided the training is paired with adequate protein intake.
