Kahramanmaraş residents prepare winter food supplies

In Kahramanmaraş, Turkey, residents are utilizing a recent period of unseasonably warm weather, locally referred to as “bastırma yazı,” to complete winter food preparations. Following a productive and rainy 2026, the current rise in temperatures has prompted intensive labor in vineyards and gardens.

Agricultural activities are currently focused on harvesting olives and grapes. The grape harvest involves pressing fruit to produce molasses, walnut-filled sausages (cevizli sucuk), samsa, and bastık. These traditional preparations are being prioritized before expected temperature drops and increased rainfall in the coming weeks, which could hinder outdoor production.
