Kahramanmaraş school shooting trial begins for parents

The first hearing has commenced in the trial regarding the mass shooting at Ayser Çalık Middle School in Kahramanmaraş, which resulted in the deaths of nine students and one teacher, and injured 15 others. The defendants, Uğur Mersinli and Peyman Pınar Mersinli, are the parents of the 14-year-old perpetrator, İsa Aras Mersinli.

Uğur Mersinli, a police chief inspector, faces charges of 'murder with probable intent' and 'violation of Law No. 6136,' with prosecutors seeking 10 life sentences and up to 30 years in prison. In his defense, he claimed his son stole the weapons from him without his knowledge and argued that he should not be held responsible for the child's actions.

Peyman Pınar Mersinli, a teacher, is charged with 'causing death and injury through conscious negligence,' with a potential sentence of up to 22.5 years. During the proceedings, the court initially ordered her release, but following an appeal by the families of the victims, the court revoked the decision and issued a warrant for her re-arrest. She was subsequently apprehended in the Osmaniye region.

The hearing included testimonies from psychologists and school counselors regarding the perpetrator's mental health and history of self-harm. The next court hearing is scheduled for December 4, 2026.
