Kahramanmaraş school attack victims' families travel for Umrah
Following the armed attack at Ayser Çalık Middle School in Kahramanmaraş, which resulted in the deaths of teacher Ayla Kara and nine students, the families of the victims have traveled to holy lands for Umrah. The group, organized by the Kahramanmaraş Governor's Office, is performing religious rites and prayers in memory of the deceased.
In response to the tragedy, the Eğitim-Bir-Sen union has issued a call for a review of disciplinary actions taken against school administrators and educators. The union expressed concern that heavy administrative sanctions were applied to staff, including managers who had only recently started their roles, and urged that responsibility be determined based on concrete evidence and legal fairness.
Eğitim-Bir-Sen also emphasized the need for a holistic action plan to prevent future violence in the educational ecosystem. This includes improving coordination between public institutions, monitoring digital platforms, enhancing guidance services, and addressing school architecture and social media standards.
