Ali Aydın murder trial begins in İzmir
The first hearing has commenced in the trial of Mahmut Delil Erik, who is accused of killing Ali Aydın, a former co-chair of the Human Rights Association (İHD) İzmir branch, in the Çiğli district of İzmir.
Aydın was killed on January 14, 2026, during a morning walk in a mountainous area. The prosecution has requested aggravated life imprisonment for Erik on the charge of killing with monstrous intent or causing suffering, along with additional charges regarding the illegal possession of weapons.
During the hearing at the Karşıyaka 1st High Criminal Court, Erik defended himself by stating the incident was not political. He claimed he had recently quit drug use and that an altercation occurred after he encountered Aydın, asserting he only reacted to what happened in the moment. The court has decided to maintain Erik's detention and postponed the trial to address remaining details in the case file.
