Breast cancer awareness efforts intensify in Turkey
Health experts and community organizations in Turkey are intensifying breast cancer awareness efforts, emphasizing that early diagnosis can increase treatment success rates to between 90% and 95%. Medical professionals, including oncology specialist Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Avcı, highlight that while age is a primary risk factor, the disease is increasingly appearing in younger women. Key risk factors include genetic mutations (BRCA), early menstruation, late menopause, obesity, and lifestyle factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption.
Various regional initiatives are underway to promote screening. In Uşak, health authorities reported that over 17,000 screenings were conducted in the first nine months of 2026, leading to several early diagnoses. Academic symposiums, such as those held at Malatya Turgut Özal University, have brought together medical professionals to discuss advanced imaging techniques and current treatment approaches.
Psychological barriers are also being addressed, as experts warn that fear of a diagnosis can lead to avoidant behavior and delayed testing. Public awareness campaigns, including student-led activities and local municipality training sessions, continue to advocate for regular self-examinations and clinical screenings, particularly for women over 40.
