KAI and INKA face pressure to improve domestic KRL quality
The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation has urged PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA) to improve the quality of domestically produced Commuter Line electric multiple units (KRL). This follows the recall of seven CLI-225 series trains in September 2026 due to technical issues found in the underframe components, which posed potential safety risks.
The recall has impacted service capacity on the Jabodetabek Commuter Line, specifically the Bogor-Jakarta route, resulting in a reduction of daily trips from 1,065 to 1,048. Director General of Railways Allan Tandiono emphasized that while the reduction in capacity is regrettable, safety standards must not be compromised.
In parallel, KAI Daop 1 Jakarta is strengthening its overhead line (LAA) protection systems to prepare for the rainy season. To prevent disruptions from lightning strikes, heavy rain, and fallen trees, KAI is enhancing electrical protection through the use of Overhead Ground Wires (OHGW) and installing arresters every 500 meters to mitigate voltage surges.
