KAI Commuter to reduce Green Line headways amid passenger surge

KAI Commuter is planning to significantly reduce train headways on the Green Line (Rangkasbitung route) to manage a massive surge in passengers. Currently, waiting times range from 10 to 15 minutes, but the company aims to cut this to just 4 to 5 minutes to address overcrowding caused by rapid residential growth along the Tanah Abang to Rangkasbitung corridor.

Data shows a sharp increase in ridership, with the Green Line averaging 245,085 daily passengers. Peak occupancy on this route has reached approximately 161 percent, surpassing other lines such as the Bogor and Bekasi/Cikarang routes. Total passenger numbers for the service have grown from 43.3 million in 2022 to a projected 77.5 million in 2025.

To support these service improvements, PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA) is currently processing an order for 16 new KRL trainsets for KAI Commuter. Additionally, intensive maintenance is underway, with several existing trainsets undergoing General Check Ups (GCU) to ensure operational readiness.
