KAI delivers first two FA-50M fighter jets to Malaysia

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has delivered the first two FA-50M light combat aircraft to the Kuantan Air Force Base in Malaysia. This delivery marks the initial phase of an 18-unit export contract valued at approximately 1.2 trillion won signed in 2023.

The aircraft arrived via an air ferry method, traveling from Sacheon, South Korea, through Jeju, the Philippines, and Labuan before reaching Kuantan. The two jets are scheduled to undergo final acceptance tests before being officially handed over to the Malaysian Air Force later this month.

The FA-50M is an upgraded export version designed to replace Malaysia's existing Hawk aircraft. It features enhanced capabilities including an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, Sniper Pod targeting equipment, and aerial refueling compatibility.

KAI aims to leverage this delivery to expand its Performance Based Logistics (PBL) business, providing long-term maintenance and operational support. The company also views this as a stepping stone for potential future sales of the KF-21 fighter jet to the Malaysian market.
