KAI reports surge in Kertanegara line ridership and ticket sales
Indonesia's state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) recorded a rise in passenger numbers on its Kertanegara service that connects Malang and Purwokerto. Between January and May 2026 the train carried 168,085 passengers, a 5.29% increase from the same period in 2025, with a notable 65.94% jump in March. Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said the service links East Java, Yogyakarta and Central Java and supports local economies through travel‑related spending.
During the school‑holiday week of 20‑26 June 2026, KAI’s Daop 2 Bandung region reported a 7.4% rise in long‑distance ticket sales, selling 94,090 tickets compared with 87,580 the week before. The increase coincided with a government stimulus offering a 30% discount on economy‑class fares from 20 June to 5 July, which made 64,640 seats available at reduced rates. Manager of Public Relations Kuswardojo attributed the higher sales to the discount and growing public confidence in railway travel.
