Kai Stänicke wins Teddy Award for debut film ‘Der Heimatlose’

Director Kai Stänicke has received the Teddy Jury Award at the Berlinale for his feature film debut, ‘Der Heimatlose’. The film follows a man named Hein who returns to his childhood island after 14 years, only to find that he is not recognized by his mother, his sister, or his former friends.

Stänicke describes the film as an allegorical tale with a timeless, fable-like structure. The production utilizes a stylized, stage-like aesthetic for its island setting, drawing comparisons to Lars von Trier’s ‘Dogville’ due to its hand-drawn, minimalist set designs. The film is scheduled for a national theatrical release on August 27, 2026.
