Kaiserslautern study reveals high public fear of crime

Results from a city-commissioned study in Kaiserslautern reveal a significant gap between official crime statistics and the actual sense of security felt by residents. The online survey, conducted by the Institute for Social Pedagogical Research Mainz (ism) between February and April, gathered over 11,100 individual responses from 2,442 participants.

Key findings indicate that 78 percent of participants fear becoming victims of threats or physical attacks in the city center. Residents reported feeling particularly unsafe in the dark, specifically near the shopping mall and around the town hall. The study noted that women reported a significantly lower sense of security than men, and individuals who had been victims of crime within the last two years expressed much higher levels of concern regarding future victimization.

Mayor Manfred Schulz acknowledged the public's anxiety, citing recent violent incidents such as a fatal knife attack at the Fackelbrunnen and a robbery on the town hall forecourt as factors that have left a lasting impact on the community. The city aims to use these findings to identify specific hotspots and implement targeted security improvements.
