KAIST researchers develop magnetic field method to predict blue OLED lifespan
A research team led by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has developed a new method to predict the lifespan of blue phosphorescent OLEDs using magnetic field measurements. Traditionally, determining the durability of OLED displays requires long-term operational tests where brightness is monitored as it declines over dozens or hundreds of hours. This process is time-consuming and can degrade the prototypes being tested.
The team, which included collaborators from Kyung Hee University, Hanbat National University, and the analysis firm ASTA, discovered that applying a magnetic field to an operating OLED causes minute changes in light emission. By isolating the specific component of these brightness changes that correlates with device aging, the researchers created a metric that can predict long-term operational life much earlier in the development cycle.
Testing on four different blue OLED structures showed that devices with a smaller initial brightness response to a magnetic field maintained their luminance longer during extended operation. This non-destructive evaluation technique could allow display manufacturers to rapidly screen materials and internal structures, significantly reducing the time and cost required to develop more durable screens for smartphones and televisions.
