Kaitaki ferry returns to service after major maintenance
The Interislander ferry Kaitaki is scheduled to return to service on 26 September following the completion of a major winter maintenance programme. The vessel underwent dry-docking in Singapore, where specialist teams performed extensive inspections and repairs on the hull, propulsion, steering, rudder, and stabilizer systems. The maintenance also included a full hull clean and the application of a new silicone-based coating intended to reduce marine growth and improve fuel efficiency.
Rail Minister Winston Peters noted that the scheduled maintenance for both the Kaitaki and the Kaiārahi during the winter period prevented a predicted ferry crisis. He stated that despite weather issues, freight and passengers continued to move through the Cook Strait.
Interislander reported a reliability rate of 100 percent for the current financial year, an increase from 99 percent in the previous financial year and significantly higher than the 82 to 84 percent recorded in 2021 and 2022. This maintenance ensures the fleet remains operational until new ferries arrive in 2029.
