Kaja Kallas announces major expansion of EU sanctions against Russia

EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas has announced plans to introduce the most extensive sanctions list against Russia since the start of the war this autumn. If approved, the new measures are expected to increase the number of sanctioned Russian individuals, companies, and organizations by one third.

Kallas noted that previous EU sanctions have already cost Russia's war machine over one trillion euros. She emphasized the need for increased pressure to force an end to the conflict and expressed hope for closer cooperation between Europe and the United States regarding sanctions.

In addition to the sanctions, Kallas addressed the need for reform within the European External Action Service (EEAS). She indicated support for calls from France and Germany to restructure the service to allow for faster decision-making during international crises.

Regarding the Middle East, Kallas reaffirmed the European Union's commitment to a two-state solution as the only long-term path to peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
