EU seeks to reinforce Aspides naval mission in Red Sea

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has called for a significant reinforcement of the Aspides naval mission in the Red Sea. Speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Kallas stated that while the mission was initially estimated to require at least 10 warships, the deteriorating security situation now necessitates even more naval and aerial assets to protect commercial shipping.

Currently, approximately six warships are participating in the mission, which was launched in February 2024 to defend merchant vessels against Houthi attacks. Kallas warned that the increased Houthi capabilities and their control over strategic areas like the Bab el-Mandeb strait pose a grave threat to European interests, supply chains, and global economic stability.

In response to the rising threats, Italy has announced preparations for a dedicated naval mission to protect its own commercial vessels, indicating it may not wait for a collective EU response. Additionally, G7 foreign ministers have called on Iran to cease providing military support to the Houthis to mitigate risks to international trade.
