Kaçkar Mountains initiative to name over 100 unnamed peaks
A study has been launched to record and name more than 100 unnamed peaks located above 3,000 meters in the Kaçkar Mountains. This initiative was announced during the Kaçkar Geographical Heritage Workshop held in Rize.
The workshop, led by the Rize Governorship with contributions from the Camadan Mountaineering and Winter Sports Club, included representatives from the Turkish Language Association, the General Directorate of Mapping, and the Turkish Mountaineering Federation. Participants divided the region into three main areas: West, Central, and East Kaçkars, examining local knowledge, historical sources, and current usage of peaks, passes, and lakes.
During the event, a 3,364-meter peak was named ‘Baydaş Peak’ in honor of Rize Governor İhsan Selim Baydaş for his contributions to the region. Experts and mountaineers, including Tunç Fındık and Yılmaz Ergün, provided presentations on the area's nature, climbing routes, and mountaineering potential.
