Kakata Central Prison jailbreak triggers manhunt in Liberia
More than 100 inmates reportedly escaped from the Kakata Central Prison in Margibi County on Sunday, September 20, triggering a massive manhunt by joint security forces. The Ministry of Justice confirmed the jailbreak and stated that the Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation is currently verifying records to establish the exact number and identities of the escapees.
Reports indicate that the inmates, many of whom were housed in Block “A,” breached sections of the prison walls and scaled the barbed-wire perimeter fence. Eyewitnesses observed large groups of male prisoners fleeing into nearby communities. Some escapees were reportedly seen carrying sticks and machetes, causing panic among local residents.
Investigations into the security breach suggest significant staffing issues. While the facility was designed for 60 inmates, it was holding approximately 217 prisoners at the time of the escape. Reports indicate that only one correctional officer was on duty during the breakout. The Armed Forces of Liberia and the Liberia National Police are actively pursuing the escapees, with at least 10 individuals having been rearrested.
