Kalaburagi heritage mapping project launched for Sharanabasaveshwara Temple
The architecture department of Sharanabasaveshwara University has launched a project to create comprehensive historical maps of the Sharanabasaveshwara Temple and the Dasoha Mahamane in Kalaburagi. This initiative, marking World Architecture Day, aims to scientifically document the architectural design and cultural significance of these heritage sites for future generations.
The mapping process is being conducted under the guidance of senior architects, including Professor Ajay Chandran C. K. from Christ University, and senior architect Kalyani. The project includes the Dasoha Mahamane, a site of immense historical importance in the Kalyana Karnataka region. The Mahamane is associated with the 18th-century saint Sharanabasaveshwara, who established the ‘Dasoha’ tradition of providing free food to the needy. A ‘Nandadeepa’ (eternal lamp) lit by the saint approximately 250 years ago continues to burn in the Mahamane today.
Historically, the Mahamane was visited by Mahatma Gandhi on February 26, 1927. During that visit, he met with the 7th Peethadhipati, Lingaikya Pujya Doddappa Appaji, to express his condemnation of attacks on the Sharanabasaveshwara Temple. The mapping project was officially inaugurated by Matoshree Dr. Dakshayini Avvaji, President of the Sharanabasaveshwara Vidyavardhaka Sangha.
