Kalamata hosts ‘Ark of the Word’ art exhibition
The group exhibition ‘Ark of the Word: Art and Writing’ has opened at the Black Box of the Kalamata Dance Hall. Featuring approximately 40 works by 32 artists from Greece and the diaspora, the exhibition explores the relationship between language, writing, and visual imagery.
The collection traces the evolution of communication from pre-alphabetic forms to the modern digital era. It includes paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, and prints. The exhibition features tributes to two prominent figures with ties to the Messenia region: the internationally recognized artist Chryssa (Chrysa Vardea-Mavromichali) and the Kalamata-born artist Giannis Bouteas (1941–2026). For the first time in his birthplace, Bouteas’s historic 1990 Venice Biennale installation is being presented.
Curated by art historian Bia Papadopoulou and under the artistic direction of Panagiotis Lampryniidis, the exhibition also addresses social and political dimensions, including themes of human rights and international issues. The event is organized by the Municipality of Kalamata’s Art Sector with support from the Greek Diaspora Foundation and the Georgios N. Vogiatzoglou Gallery. The exhibition is open to the public until November 8, 2026.
