Kalamata implements BeatTheHeat II to combat urban heat

The Municipality of Kalamata is implementing the second phase of its BeatTheHeat initiative, known as BeatTheHeat II. This project aims to enhance the city's resilience against climate change, specifically targeting the urban heat island effect.

By utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and the FIWARE open standard, the municipality is developing a digital infrastructure to collect and integrate environmental data. This system monitors temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and various pollutants, including CO2, CO, SO2, NO, NO2, O3, and particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10).

One key application of this data is EasyRide, a service designed to support citizen movement during periods of extreme heat and heatwaves. The initiative is part of Kalamata's broader strategy to achieve climate neutrality and urban resilience by 2030.
