Kalamata Municipal Philharmonic workers demand legal labor rights
The Workers' Association of the Kalamata Municipal Philharmonic is demanding the immediate restoration of legal labor and wage standards following a formal opinion issued by labor expert Alexis Mitropoulos. The opinion supports a previous ruling by the Messinia Single-Member Court of First Instance, asserting that the municipal authority has failed to comply with legality since the dissolution of the Municipal Philharmonic legal entity in December 2023.
Key grievances include the unilateral reduction of weekly rehearsals from three to two, which the association claims directly impacts wages. Furthermore, the association maintains that musicians are entitled to a monthly salary—including unified pay scales, instrument allowances, and musical allowances—rather than an hourly wage, as stipulated by Law 4483/2017 and existing collective bargaining agreements.
The workers are calling on the Municipality of Kalamata to cease practices that degrade the status of the Philharmonic and its employees, specifically addressing the suspension of free lessons and the failure to pay corresponding salaries to musicians.
