Kalamata named Smart Town of the Year with five innovation awards

Kalamata has been named ‘Smart Town of the Year’ for the second consecutive year at the Best City Awards 2026. The city received a total of five gold awards and one silver award for its technological and sustainable initiatives.

The gold awards were granted for several key projects: the Kalamata Digital Twin, which integrates climate pact data for 2030; ‘Kalamata Without Obstacles,’ focusing on accessibility and smart mobility for people with disabilities; ‘CityMobile Kalamata,’ a digital guide for citizens and the local market; and two water management projects by DEYAK, ‘Smart Water Kalamata’ and ‘WaterFuture Kalamata,’ which utilize digital systems to ensure long-term water security.

Additionally, the city received a silver award for the social impact of the ‘Reggina’ multi-purpose center. Deputy Mayor Vasilis Papaefstathiou noted that these distinctions validate the systematic efforts of the municipal administration, led by Mayor Thanasis Vasilopoulos, to create an environmentally friendly, technologically smart, and socially just city.
