Kalamata school complex vandalized following attempted occupation
Extensive vandalism and property damage occurred at the EPAL school complex in Kalamata, Greece, following an attempted occupation on Monday, September 28. The damage includes broken windows, destroyed interactive boards, and damage to classroom furniture and equipment, occurring shortly after recent maintenance work was completed.
Police have arrested four students—a 19-year-old and three minors aged 15, 16, and 17—for disrupting the school's operations. Three parents were also detained for neglect of supervision of minors. Authorities are investigating whether these individuals are also responsible for the vandalism or if unknown actors took advantage of the unrest to enter the building.
The Association of Parents and Guardians of the Municipality of Kalamata condemned the destruction, stating that the actions deprive students of necessary infrastructure. Similarly, the ELME Messinias union condemned the “barbaric phenomena of vandalism,” noting that such actions are foreign to the student movement. The Municipality of Kalamata intends to file a lawsuit for the damage to municipal property.
