Kalannin solar power plant seeks water management permit
The Kalannin solar power plant in Uusikaupunki is undergoing a water management permit process under the Water Act. While the project initially proceeded under the assumption that only zoning and building permits were required, subsequent land use changes and extensive ditching necessitated a formal water permit to regulate the impact on downstream water bodies and flood protection.
According to Ville Keskisarja of the Permit and Supervisory Authority, the solar plant can begin electricity production and operations even before the water permit process is finalized, provided other necessary permits are in order. The permit process will specifically evaluate the existing ditching and water management structures to determine if modifications, monitoring, or compensations are required to protect the local water environment and nature.
