Kalavryta Mayor calls for better healthcare to combat demographic decline
Thanasis Papadopoulos, the Mayor of Kalavryta and President of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Western Greece, has stated that strengthening healthcare structures is essential to reversing demographic decline in Greece's mountainous regions. Speaking at the opening of the 3rd Panhellenic Conference of the Scientific Society of Kalavryta Doctors ‘Melampous’, Papadopoulos emphasized that quality healthcare is a fundamental public good necessary to prevent young people from leaving these areas.
The Mayor highlighted the ongoing efforts to bolster the local health map, calling for more doctors, nursing staff, administrative personnel, and medical equipment. He noted that a health map should not merely be a list of understaffed or non-functional services, but a functional system that ensures prevention and protection for all citizens. He also acknowledged the past contributions of the ‘Melampous’ society, which has organized free polyclinics in areas such as Dafni, Kleitoria, and Tripotama.
