Kaleb Johnson seeks improvement after Steelers preseason struggle

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Kaleb Johnson expressed a desire to improve following a difficult Week 2 preseason performance against the New York Jets. Despite receiving 10 carries—the most on the team—Johnson gained only 39 rushing yards, averaging 3.9 yards per carry.

Head coach Mike McCarthy noted that increasing Johnson's workload was a “conscious effort” to provide the second-year back with more opportunities. Johnson, a 2025 third-round pick from the University of Iowa, also recorded two receptions for 15 yards during the game.

The Steelers' backfield remains a competitive committee heading into the 2026 season. Johnson currently sits behind veteran Rico Dowdle and Jaylen Warren on the depth chart. While Johnson struggled with burst and tackling in the recent outing, he stated that he believes he can perform better in future opportunities.
