Sumatra and Kalimantan face rising hotspots and economic instability
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported a significant increase in hotspots across Sumatra and Kalimantan, raising concerns over forest and land fires. In Sumatra, 2,610 hotspots were detected, with South Sumatra recording the highest number at 1,311. Riau province also reported 355 hotspots, primarily concentrated in Pelalawan Regency with 216 detections. These fires in Riau have already burned more than 700 hectares of land.
In South Kalimantan, 696 hotspots were identified, with Banjar Regency recording the highest concentration of 127. The Fire Weather Index (FWI) for the region shows high risk levels, indicating intense fire potential. In Pekanbaru, smoke from these fires has reduced visibility to 2.5 kilometers and caused air quality to reach unhealthy and very unhealthy levels.
Simultaneously, economic uncertainty in Kalimantan is mounting due to delays and uncertainties in coal mining permit (IUP) renewals. This regulatory instability is impacting local economies, leading to potential job losses for approximately 15,080 workers near the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) area and affecting up to 60,000 people including their dependents. The slowdown in mining activities has also negatively impacted supporting local businesses such as catering, laundry, and transportation services.
