Kallanai barrage to release Cauvery water for delta irrigation

Water released from the Mettur Dam has reached the historic Kallanai in the Tiruchi district, enabling the discharge of water into the Cauvery delta irrigation network. Following the opening of the Mettur Dam on September 1, the initial release of 5,000 cubic feet per second was increased to 7,000 cusecs to meet the requirements of farmers in the delta districts.

The water has passed the Mukkombu regulator and is expected to be released from the Kallanai barrage on Sunday to support agricultural areas. The distribution system utilizes a network of rivers and channels branching from the ancient structure, including the Cauvery, Vennar, and Kollidam rivers. As of Saturday evening, the water level in the Mettur reservoir was reported at 92.25 feet.
