Kalmar County calls for increased climate preparedness
In Kalmar County, Sweden, there is a growing call to integrate climate preparedness more deeply into the regional political agenda. While discussions on preparedness often focus on war and national defense, proponents argue that society must also prepare for the ongoing climate crisis, including extreme heat, droughts, fires, and flooding.
For the coastal region of Kalmar, these changes pose specific risks to food production, water resources, housing, infrastructure, and the local economy. Efforts are needed to secure sustainable food production and support agriculture and forestry in managing water scarcity and fire risks. Additionally, there is a need to strengthen protections for coastal environments and communities against rising sea levels and flooding.
Beyond mitigation and protection, the climate transition is viewed as an opportunity to strengthen the region through investments in infrastructure. Developing rail lines such as Kust till kustbanan, Stångådalsbanan, and Tjustbanan is highlighted as a way to improve goods transport and public transit, potentially creating jobs and making the community more resilient.
